Monday, January 31st Hours 32-40

On to the start of my second week here at Stencil, over the weekend I worked on some commission work and continued to settle into my new home in Nottingham.

Monday morning I was brief for an illustration task, for this, I would have to illustrate an image using illustrator for it to be used for animating in the future. For this it was very important that I kept my work neat and tidy, making sure to clearly name all my layers. For this, there was so much information that I was briefed for 45 minutes. I learned about the company, which was called Flooid, what tools to use in illustrator, colours and so much more.

Illustration is one of my favourite types of design and I was so happy to be able to work on illustrations. I regularly take illustration commissions and I even work as an illustrator/designer for a company, alongside this, I am most proficient in Illustrator as it is the tool I use every day, so I was definitely most comfortable doing this type of work.

Butchers Sketches

My task was to illustrate the front of a butcher's shop, I was shown the style of the other illustrations it would have to match and given their official colour palette which I could create my illustration from.

I started with a rough sketch which blocked out the main shapes and gave me a great start to pull into illustrator.

I worked on the illustration for the rest of the day and was very happy with the result, after showing the finished illustration, the only adjustments I was told to make was the colours, I was shown how to use tints in illustrator and told to make sure that every colour in the image was a tint of the main ‘Water’ colour.

Butchers Illustration and comments Day 1

Tuesday, February 1st Hours 40-48

As my illustration from yesterday was very well received, today I was given another to work on for the same client, this one was an image of someone handing over a loyalty card to a cashier in a shop. For this, I had to make it clear that there was a till sitting on the desk which had a screen. I had to research different types of tills and created a selection of these which I then showed. After deciding on which till to use,I created a few different variations of the till in Illustrator and got quick feedback on which one to use.

The colour palette was made from the purple colour featured on the brand's official palette and the illustration again was made using tints and shades of this colour.

For the hand, I was able to look at past illustrations and use these along with reference images I took of my own hand to create the fully vectorised version which would go into the illustration

The finished product was again well received and I really enjoyed creating it

Wednesday, February 2nd Hours 48-56

Today I was briefed on a new client, a bar/restaurant called Baresca. My task for them was to illustrate and design a lightbox advertising their Sangria Cocktail which was to be “Colourful/bold - nothing pale/white (unless a detail on a bold illustration obviously) - got to be clear on the white light”

I was given some illustrations that were already being used on their menus and was able to get a ‘feel’ of what the branding was and where it wanted to go (as this was part of a refresh for Baresca)

I saw on their menu that they had 3 variations of Sangria and wanted to be able to include all 3 of these in my design. My initial sketch was liked so I was able to begin bringing this to Illustrator.

Baresca Sangria Initial Versions

When I had made this up I was able to send in different versions into the Discord chat and get feedback on these.

Baresca Sangria Updated Versions

Overall I really enjoyed this particular illustration, I loved the colours and the amount of creative freedom I had with it

Baresca Sangria Final

Thursday, February 3rd Hours 56-64

Again today I was working on some illustrations for Baresca, this time vegetables!

I was to complete a lemon, chilli, coriander and tomato, these were pretty easy to complete and I was able to get these finished by the end of the day.

Final Illustrations

I also was told that the client for the butcher's illustration I completed a few days prior decided to change the butcher to a fried chicken shop/takeaway, similar to KFC and was told to just alter my original illustration to match this new idea.

Now we are at the end of my second week here at STENCIL, and I can say that I have enjoyed this week so much more than last week, it is crazy how much the work you are doing can influence how fast a week goes by. I’ve felt much more comfortable in the illustration side of design that I’ve been working on this week.

Again all of my work was received well and the small changes and feedback I was given was very useful and I even learned a few new tricks in some of the programmes I’ve been using for years!
